Type O Blood Group Individuals More Prone to Cholera Infections

If you’re a person with type O blood group, then beware! You may have frequent cholera attacks. Why some people get affected by a disease more often than others? Is it your fate or blood group? It’s may be your blood group. The type of your blood can determine certain characteristics in you which can make up your biochemical individuality. Uniqueness of Type O Blood Blood groups are of four types namely A, B, O and AB. These antigens determine the personality of an individual. If you have type O blood group, then you differ from all the other blood groups due to a unique quality. O blood group people have two types of antibodies in the blood, one against type A antigen and another against type B antigen. This is considered as a defensive effect which allows them to donate blood to all individuals. That’s why Type O blood group people are termed as “Universal Blood Donors”. Though it’s a universal advantage, this unique type of immunity makes the individual susceptible to many infections. Earlier studies have shown that people with type O blood group are highly prone to ulcers, thyroid disorders and intestinal problems. A new study by researchers at the Washington University has found that people with type O blood may get affected severely by cholera than other blood groups. Cholera Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by Vibrio cholera. It can lead to severe diarrhea and could be fatal if left untreated. World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 4.3 million people die due to cholera every year. It can affect both children and adults, but 80% of affected individuals do not develop any symptoms even after 10 days of infection. Patients get dehydrated fast due to loss of fluids through frequent diarrhea. So, they need oral rehydration salts to hydrate body and prevent death. Cholera spreads through contaminated food and water. Prevention is only by maintaining hygienic environments and adequate sanitation. Type O Blood Group Link to Cholera Researchers examined the effects of cholera antigen on intestinal epithelial stem cells called enteroids containing type A blood group and type O blood group. Studies have shown that blood antigens are not only present in the red blood cells but also in the cells lining the intestine. So, when cholera antigen was tested in A and O blood antigens, they found that levels of the signaling molecule were twice greater in the enteroids with the type O antigen than type A antigen. The most common neurotoxins found in the shark meat and fins were mercury and β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Both these toxins pose health risks to humans and combined effect of both can have synergistic toxic effects. When mercury enters the aquatic system, it coverts itself into a more dangerous form called as methylmercury. It is a neurotoxin and causes detrimental effects in humans. Most of the mercury consumed by fish is methylmercury and dietary intake is the dominant source of exposure to methylmercury. Harmful Effects of Shark Meat Methylmercury levels in shark can lead to blindness, loss of balance and even death. Shark meat can damage nervous system. Pregnant women and children should not eat shark meat, fins or cartilage as it can lead to mental disabilities in babies. They grew breast cancer cells by using stem cells, known as mammospheres.  When these mammospheres were treated using estrogen or BPA and then with melatonin, there was a greater reduction in breast tumors. This effect heightened when the process was done simultaneously. Researchers suggested that their findings may help develop new treatment for strategies for hormone-derived breast cancer. Among these are trans-anethole (anise and fennel), estragole (basil), eugenol (clove) and isoeugenol (ylang-ylang). Researchers introduced fine particulate matter into human cell cultures of bronchial epithelial cells (lung) and cancer-derived hepatic cells (liver). The particulate matter triggered inflammation in these cells, leading to an increase in two types of cytokines; interleukin- 6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL- 8). The selected compounds of essential oils have cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory properties. So, at optimum dose, these four compounds were introduced in the cell cultures damaged by particulate matter. They found that these compounds suppressed the levels of the Cytokines IL-6 by 96% and cytokines IL-8 by 87%. Citrus fruits are rich in a type of antioxidants called flavanones which can counteract this process and lower the effects of reactive oxygen species in the body. The effect of flavanones against oxidative stress was already proved by the team of researchers. So, they further tested flavanones in mice fed a high-fat diet. Effect of Citrus Fruits on Lifestyle Diseases       The study included two groups of mice, where one half was given a high-fat diet along three flavanones namely hesperidia, eriocitrin and eriodictyol. The other group of mice was fed a high-fat diet but no flavanones. In mice on a high-fat diet without the flavanones, cell damage markers called thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) increased in the blood by 80% and in the liver by 50%. But in mice on a high-fat diet along with flavanones; hesperidia, eriocitrin and eriodictyol, there was a remarkable decrease in the TBARS. The cell damage markers were decreased by 50% in the liver and blood. Hesperidin and eriodictyol also reduced fat accumulation and liver damage in mice. The authors reported that flavanones did not reduce the weight of the mice but instead showed a significant effect on the weight by lowering oxidative stress, blood sugar levels, lipid levels and liver damage.
